Want to enroll in a course?

If you are not admitted to a degree program at the UI and want to take a distance or online course, apply as Distance Education Nondegree Student and join our HAWKEYE community. 

 

Step 1. APPLY

As an undergraduate distance education nondegree student, you can enroll in courses at the University of Iowa without seeking a degree. To be admitted you will:

  • Go to: IOWA, UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSIONS
  • Scroll down to the middle of the page under Application Process and click on: Continuing Education Student Application
  • Go to ‘Create Account…’ button to enroll in your course(s).
  • Go through the steps for New Account Setup and fill in the requested information
  • This will take you to a page titled, Continuing Education Students. Fill in personal information as requested.
  • After you complete and submit the application, wait for an email that will give instructions on how to set up your HawkID. This may take up to 24 hours.
  • Once your HawkID is set up, you may log on to MyUI to enroll in your course(s).

As a graduate distance education nondegree student, you can enroll in advanced-level courses at the University without seeking a graduate degree. To be admitted you will:

  • Go to: IOWA, GRADUATE ADMISSIONS
  • ​​​​Scroll down to the middle of the page under Application Process and click on: Continuing Education Student Application
  • Go to ‘Create Account…’ button
  • Go through the steps for New Account Setup and fill in the requested information
  • This will take you to a page titled, Continuing Education Students. Fill in personal information as requested.
  • After you complete and submit the application, wait for an email that will give instructions on how to set up your HawkID. This may take up to 24 hours.
  • Once your HawkID is set up, you may log on to MyUI to enroll in your course(s).

To receive graduate credit—U.S. students: Official transcripts are required as well as meeting a minimum 2.50 (on a 4.00 scale) GPA

International Students only: Submit an official transcript showing your baccalaureate (or higher) degree to the Office of Admissions, 107 Calvin Hall, Iowa City, IA 52242-1396

Workshops are generally condensed course offerings, often spanning 3 weeks or less.

 

If you would like to enroll in a workshop, you will apply as an undergraduate or graduate Nondegree Distance Student. 

 

 

Search for workshops in MyUI by selecting "Workshops" in the Delivery Mode checkbox. 

 

Workshops are identified in MyUI by the section number ending in 0WK*.



 

Undergraduate Workshop Application

Graduate Workshop Application

  • Go to: IOWA, GRADUATE ADMISSIONS
  • Scroll down to the middle of the page under Application Process and click on: Continuing Education Student Application
  • Go to ‘Create Account…’ button
  • Go through the steps for New Account Setup and fill in the requested information
  • This will take you to a page titled, Continuing Education Students. Fill in personal information as requested.
  • After you complete and submit the application, wait for an email that will give instructions on how to set up your HAWK ID. This may take up to 24 hours.
  • Once your Hawk ID is set up, you may log on to MyUI to enroll in your workshop.

Step 2. HawkID 

You will need a HawkID and password to log into MyUI and register for courses. If you already have a HawkID and need to reset your password, you may do so on the HawkID website. If you are new to the University, you will be asked to select a HawkID and password after you submit an application for admission.

Step 3. University of Iowa Email

Email is the official mode of communication for the University of Iowa. You will need to set up a University of Iowa email account. You will be able to access it from any web browser via Office 365. As a University of Iowa student, Office 365 provides access to Microsoft Office for free over the internet, including up-to-date access to programs such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

To set-up your University of Iowa email, log on to MyUI and go to Email Tools under STUDENT INFORMATION.

Step 4. Enroll

1. Use your HawkID and password to log on to MyUI.

2. Look up your course number and section under the COURSES/REGISTRATION tab by:

  • typing the letters for the curricular area in the Course Subject box (ex. EDTL)
  • entering the four numbers in COURSE NUMBER, and
  • typing the letter/number combination in the SECTION NUMBER box and hit Search

3. Check that the correct course is listed, then hit the ENROLL button and you should be set.

Courses with restrictions:
Restrictions placed on course enrollment are often listed in the Registration Information or Description section of the course summary on MyUI. You will need to determine if your status will allow you to enroll in the course or follow the instructions provided to remove the restriction.

Courses with prerequisites:
Courses prerequisites are checked and enforced at the time of registration. For additional information please visit the Prerequisite Q&A page in MyUI.

Step 5: Start Your Course

After you are enrolled in a course, please proceed to our START YOUR COURSE section for additional information on logging into to your online course, finding textbook information, and other vital information.
