Kellie Nelson, RT to BS
I chose to apply for the online RT to BS degree program after I completed a 2 year Radiologic Technologist program at Iowa Central Community College. I found the RT to BS program to be incredibly beneficial. It allowed me to live and work where I wanted, while also working towards Bachelors of Science from a highly distinguished medical school. I also felt compelled to further my education in the field of radiology, instead of having to choose another area of study. After finding this program, I was thrilled to see the University of Iowa offered a BS degree on Cardiac- Interventional Radiology. I knew prior to starting my associates program that I wanted to work in the Cardiac Cath Lab and save lives. Having the option to study Cardiac-Interventional Radiology felt like a perfect match after graduating and becoming a licensed Radiologic Technologist. During the program, I was also able to participate in an internship at Trinity Medical Center in the Quad Cities in the Cardiac Cath lab. This accelerated my learning and by the end of the internship, I was scrubbing in everyday along side the InterventionaL Cardiologists. It also prepared me for a job in the Adult Cardiac Cath Lab at the University of Iowa where I worked for a few years. Since then, I have moved to Chicago where I currently work as an Area Clinical Consultant at Abiomed, a J&J MedTech device company. I consult hospitals all over the Chicagoland area on how to best use Abiomed’s family of heart pumps: the Impella. I have no doubt I wouldn’t be in this position if it wasn't for the Carver College of Medicine’s program. It is truly a wonderful opportunity for licensed Radiology Technologists to further their education.
