Proctorio Banner

Some University of Iowa courses require students to complete exams that utilize a remote, online proctoring system. This is done to ensure the highest integrity in exam completion. The controlled environment created by supervised exams allows proctors to verify the identity of the student and prevent the use of unauthorized aids or tools. Currently, the platform used by Distance and Online Education to administer remote, proctored examinations is Proctorio.

Proctorio is a third-party vendor, which has successfully cleared the University of Iowa's Technology Review Process. It is an on-demand online proctoring tool integrated into ICON to make taking remotely proctored quizzes and exams easier and more convenient. No more scheduling, fees or going to a test center to take an exam. If Proctorio will be used for students' online assessments, this means the exams must be proctored; it is a requirement of the course. If students experience technological or geographical limitations and cannot use Proctorio, Exam Services may be able to make alternate proctoring arrangements. Refer to the Exams module in the ICON course site for more details.

Six Things to Know About Proctorio

1. To use Proctorio, students will need:

  • a computer with 2 GB of free RAM
  • a reliable internet connection
  • a webcam capable of scanning the testing environment
  • a working microphone
  • a quiet, private location
  • the most up-to-date version of the Google Chrome browser. Proctorio is an extension for Chrome, and student and instructors must use Chrome as their web browser to access quizzes or exams secured by Proctorio.
  • the Proctorio extension installed on the computer used to take the quiz or exam. The Proctorio extension can be uninstalled after the quiz or exam and then reinstalled whenever needed again.

2. Proctorio records the student taking an exam.

Proctorio is powered by artificial intelligence, not by a human. To provide a proctored environment, Proctorio allows instructors to choose from a number of different settings. These can include watching students through their webcam, listening through their microphone, recording the student's screen, closing other browsers/tabs/programs, and requiring room scans.

3. Room Scans are required.

Room scans are required of all students taking a proctored online quiz or exam. Students should complete a good quality room scan at the beginning of their exam. A successful room scan will clearly show the area on the desk, under the desk, and a 360 degree view of the entire room.

4. Proctorio can and will close the student out of the exam.

If Proctorio suspects certain types of academic misconduct, it will shut itself down. Because Proctorio serves as the exam access point, when Proctorio shuts down, the student can no longer access the exam. For example, Proctorio does not typically allow keyboard shortcuts. Proctorio does not know the difference between Ctrl + F, to find a word on a page in Chrome, and a shortcut used to access an unauthorized program/file. Proctorio's response to shortcut use (or Facetime calls or text messages received) is to shut down. In innocent cases like these, students should be allowed to re-enter the exam.

5. Do not use keyboard shortcuts during the exam.

As mentioned above, Proctorio will view this as a potential cheating threat and will shut down the exam.

6. Students have access to online help during the exam.

Students are not out-of-luck when an exam in Proctorio fails. Most of the time, Proctorio failures are innocent. Students can contact Proctorio, and most of the time Proctorio is able to get the student back into the exam. Students can Live Chat, email, or call Proctorio. Proctorio's contact info can be found in the Exams modules in ICON and by clicking on the gray shield in the upper right corner of Chrome.

  • Use a computer with webcam and microphone.
  • Have your photo ID ready to show.
  • Use the Google Chrome browser to login to your ICON course site.
  • Add the Proctorio Extension if needed.
    • HINT: The Secure Exam Proctor (Proctorio) sidebar only displays in the ICON navigation bar if Proctorio has not been installed.
  • Go to Quizzes and take the Practice Quiz to ensure you can successfully complete a quiz using Proctorio.

Proctorio offers 24/7 live support via phone, email and chat.

Note: Proctorio Student Support and Live Chat are only available from within ICON.

Some courses have online exams which can be completed using Proctorio, a virtual proctoring platform. When an exam is taken via Proctorio, the location needs to be treated as a testing environment. Test takers are required to abide by the guidelines below. Failure to follow the guidelines will result in a report of suspicious activity being triggered in the platform. Each quiz or exam is reviewed by the course instructor. Deviation from the guidelines may result in a test taker being reported for academic misconduct and/or a punitive action. See this website for information about academic misconduct: https://distance.uiowa.edu/policies

A. No supplemental materials allowed – unless approved by the instructor.

  • If approved by the instructor, Proctorio has both an online whiteboard for scratch paper and a basic or scientific online-calculator.
  • If other materials are allowed (scratch paper, calculators, notes, etc.), other materials will be listed in the Exams Module in ICON and in the exam instructions in ICON.

B. No collaboration of any kind – unless approved by the instructor.

  • No electronic communication devices (phones, other computers, tablets, watches, etc.,) unless approved by the instructor.
  • No access to resources either in print or on a device during the exam unless approved by the instructor.
  • No personal calculators unless approved by the instructor.
  • No headphones, earbuds, or any other listening devices may be used or worn during the test unless approved by the instructor.
  • No music, tv shows, movies, or podcasts should be playing in the background.
  • No persons other than the test taker should be in the testing environment. The presence of others will be detected by Proctorio and will generate a report of suspicious activity.
  • Face and eyes of the test taker must be visible for the duration of the exam.
  • No leaving the exam or the room for any reason until the exam is completed and submitted.

C. Room Scan required at the start of the test and/or at random times during the test.

  • Room must be shown at workstation level. Test takers should show the area on the desk, under the desk, and a 360-degree view of the entire room.
  • Don't show the room at ceiling level.
  • Don't be in the center of the room scan.
  • Move the camera slowly and thoroughly enough to provide a clear view of the test environment.
  • An incomplete or poor room scan can result in a lower grade or suspicion of academic misconduct.
  • A new room scan is required for every proctored quiz or exam.
  • Complete the proctored quiz or exam in the same room shown in the room scan.

D. Proctorio offers 24/7 live support via chat.

  • Technical problems which prevent successful proctoring may affect the score. Notify the instructor of any issue.
  • Live Chat is available by clicking the gray shield image in the top right corner of the Chrome browser or by locating Proctorio Tools in the top left corner of the quiz/exam screen. Live Chat is particularly helpful as the representative can see the test taker's screen to better assist with problems.

E. Academic Misconduct

  • If the test taker deviates from the Guidelines for Using Proctorio, the test taker must explain the incident to the instructor in writing as soon as possible.
  • If the test taker's explanation and the instructor's review reveal a reasonably innocent explanation, the instructor may choose to allow the test taker to modify the behavior and comply with the guidelines to prevent future punitive action.
  • If the test taker's explanation is unsatisfactory, the instructor may choose to impose a punitive action.
  • If the test taker does not report a deviation and the instructor suspects a violation of the Guidelines for Using Proctorio, the instructor will contact the test taker and punitive action may be taken.
  • If the test taker has questions or concerns about academic misconduct or a punitive action, the test taker should consult the following site: https://distance.uiowa.edu/policies
